An easy way to reduce climate change is to prevent food waste from going into landfills by composting fruit and vegetable scraps. When buried in landfills, this waste produces methane gas, which is over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in causing climate change in the short run. But when composted, scraps become valuable soil that recycles nutrients and microbes necessary for healthy plants and food.
The organization Zero Waste Capital District is sponsoring a compost bin/rain barrel sale. Order online by Oct. 7 and pick up on Oct. 8. See the options and instructional video at
If you've never composted before, but are interested in finding out more, Zero Waste Capital DIstrict has a great set of introductory videos and resources on their website!
