The principal liturgy is the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion. In this rite we focus on the events leading up to and including Jesus’ death through crucifixion. In his suffering we recognize the suffering that pervades our world and we pray for those who are afflicted and those who have the power to effect change. We also acknowledge our own contributions to this suffering through our sinful behaviors, whether personally or as part of oppressive systems.
We recognize Jesus’ great act of love in submitting to the evils of human weakness as we reverence the cross. Parishioners are invited to take a turn carrying the cross if they are physically able and all are welcome to honor the cross with a touch of the hand or kneeling before it.
Mass is not celebrated on this day but Communion is offered to those who participate in this liturgy.
