A Place of
Courageous Hospitality
Hospitality
Dr. Shannen Dee Williams' Subversive Habits: Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom Struggle is the first full history of Black Catholic nuns in the United States. It explains their dealings with white supremacy, both within and outside the Church, and their prominent role in the civil rights movement. The book is quite revealing and challenging and asks us to reconsider our Church’s history and what needs to happen moving forward.
We will discuss the book in a five-session Zoom conversation beginning Wednesday, October 11 at 7PM. The book may be purchased at the Book House at Stuyvesant Plaza at a discount or online.
The reading schedule is:
October 11 – First Session: Preface and Introduction (up to page 23)
October 18 – Second Session – Chapters 1 and 2 (pages 23 to 102)
October 25 – Third Session – Chapter 3 (pages 103 to 133)
November 1 – Fourth Session – Chapters 4 and 5 (pages 134 to 199)
